What is Plaque?
Plaque is the normal accumulation of bacteria, microorganisms and their byproducts which stick to the tooth surfaces. Dental plaque is soft and easily removed by brushing and flossing your teeth. Accumulation of plaque can lead to gum disease, which is called gingivitis. Gingivitis can progress to the more serious disease called periodontitis. That's where you can start losing teeth. Plaque buildup also causes tooth decay. This is why your dentist is always "suggesting" that you brush and floss! You can prevent cavities and gum disease! |
